Civil Society Organizations in Thailand Are Very Concerned about the Crisis in Hong Kong and its Potential Escalation into More Violent Confrontations
The protest in Hong Kong has been going on for more than two months without any sign of subsiding into a negotiated agreement. This political crisis urgently needs a political solution. We think that the so-called “an eye for an eye” approach and the dissemination of fake news only lead to meta-conflict dominated by reactions and polarization. A new approach based on mutually acceptable principle is needed. Each party to the conflict should be able to express its grievances and demands to the other parties and to the public. It is normal that there be opposing demands. At this stage it may be alright if the demands are clearly stated and genuinely heard by other parties. This new approach may help build on the necessary confidence that would be conducive to direct or mediated negotiation.
We believe that people have the rights to express their opinion and to peacefully assemble. We believe that the government and the police have the duty to respect those rights and to keep order in accordance to the law and international standards without the use of excessive force. In case of demonstrations, we urge the organizers to take precaution to avoid violence and to keep any provocateurs at bay. We also urge the police to observe maximum restraints.
We also call on the Chinese government not to send security forces into Hong Kong. It should continue to observe the Basic Law 1997 that outlines the “one country two systems” for Hong Kong. The Chinese government should follow the joint agreement with the government of United Kingdom while taking over the administration of Hong Kong. The agreement assures that Hong Kong will enjoy a high level of autonomy and the people of Hong Kong will have certain rights and a different economic system for at least 50 years, that is until 2047.
